This is Emma Nutt. She was the very 1st woman telephone operator. She was hired Sept 1st 1878 and she was hired by "THE" Alexander Graham Bell. She was paid $10.00 a month for a 54 hr workweek. Her career lasted about 35 yrs.
Now they are all computerized..
Why is this for my Mom? Because she used to be a telephone operator after she got out of High School. She said she loved talking all day long. She started out as a local 411 operator, then she moved up to a Colorado state information operator. She said when people were rude etc. that they would just "click" and they were gone Ha! so....be nice to your operator.
Do you remember any of these?
Rotary Phones? and Party lines?
Push button Phones?
Princess Phones?
Telephone booths? Need a dime?
Old BIG cellphones?
Thank goodness for Technology. Mom is lost without her cell phone.
Me....I don't need all that stuff. I just need her....I BARK!!! Our barkers never get outdated and the sound is always there...loud and clear!!
Happy Emma Nutt Day.
Well Gail says she remembers all of those except the first. But I'm with you Oreo. Who needs a smartphone when you have a bark?

So to say my mom remembers them all but the first phone. When she was little she would listen in the the party line. Lots of gossip heard that way.

ReplyDeleteMom Kim here (just sent you an amil too) My sister started out at the phone company as an operator - she can remember using that board in that pic. She worked as an operator for many years before she moved to a different position. Did you work for Mountain Bell in Denver, Colorado - she worked there for a bit before transferring back here to Topeka. She retired a few years ago. Yep, I can remember using a rotary phone and others since that time. And no, I can't stand to be without my cell phone.
ReplyDeleteMy mom remembers all but the first one. ha ha
ReplyDeleteNow she would be lost with out her cell phone.
if she leaves home without it she goes back for it
and still leaves me home. :(

ReplyDeleteSHE doesn't remember the first...not quite that old, but does remember the second...and a party line. We still don't use a cell phone.
ReplyDeleteMom remembers all but the first one. She thinks it funny when she was a teenager they didn't have cell phones and you had to find all your friends to hang out with or go home to let your parents know you'd be staying over at a friends house. Mom now doesn't leave the house without her phone. She got her first cell phone in 1988 the big bag phone and has had the same number since. She said she was so mad at dad when he got her that phone because they were just starting out and didn't have money to throw away on foolish things.
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
Oh yea! Remember all but the first one. She remembers when the princess phones came out and it was a big deal to have one

Our mom said she remembers all of that! She told us that they had an 8-pawty line when she was a kid. I don't know what that is!

Barkin are da best.
ReplyDelete$10 for a whole month. In 1878 just bare bones lodging for a family of four (tenament) was $5.55. You'd be hard pressed to live on $10. Bless her for her hard work and faithfulness. Dad still has a Aqua rotary phone from the 70's by his bed. It still works.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, Oreo!! We are with you tho...barkers work just fine for us!!
